The 10th anniversary Thompson Golf Classic, held on Tuesday, September
16th 2008 was a resounding success. Eighty-four golfers enjoyed playing
at Whirlpool Golf Course in Niagara Falls, Ontario, one of Canada’s
most highly rated and renowned public golf courses. An excellent dinner, served with Mike Weir wine, was followed by an address from Stanley Thompson, a namesake of the famous architect. Artist Michele Clarkson debuted the first in the series of Thompson Heritage Collection paintings, "Whirlpool GC, 18th Hole."
The 2009 Thompson Golf Classic wil. be held on Thursday September 17th at Galt Country Club in Cambridge Ontario. Galt CC began as a 9 hole course designed by Percy Barrett in 1906. In 1930, under the direction of a Stanley Thompson, the golf course was expanded to 18 holes. In the early 1960's four holes were lost to the adjacent hospital lands requiring layout revisions, sympathetic to the Thompson design, by Bob Moote (who had worked directly with Stanley Thompson in the late 40's and early 50's.) Prior to the Club's 100th anniversary an irrigation reservoir and bunker renovations were undertaken by Doug Carrick. Further details regarding the '09 Tournament will be posted at a later date.
