Society Contacting All ST Clubs

CONTACTING ALL GOLF COURSES DESIGNED, RENOVATED & CONSULTED AT BY ‘ STANLEY THOMPSON’

Dear Sir/Madame,

On behalf of the Stanley Thompson Society (STS), I would like to wish you and your Club the very best for a successful 2010 season and beyond. The Society is contacting all golf courses that early-mid 1900’s eminent golf architect Stanley Thompson designed, renovated or consulted at. Should you not be the most apt contact, would it be possible to forward this note to someone within your organization that might be of assistance? Thank you for your time and attention today. ‘Several quick points to bring to your attention today, the first and foremost of which pertains to the Society’s web-site.

I. STANLEY THOMPSON SOCIETY Web-Site Update (www.stanleythompson.com).

The Society is in the process of updating its ‘WEB-SITE’. Several years back when the site was initially opened, we successfully contacted a significant number of golf courses that golf architect Stanley Thompson had been involved in. Permission to post Club text, plans and pictures was requested, as well as any photos or additional information that might be appropriate. Our initial launch was very successful and browsing visits to the site continue to be quite brisk in 2010. In updating the site, we have in many instances at this preliminary stage taken the liberty of excerpting text and photos from respective Club web-sites for use on the Stanley Thompson Society web-site.

As time permits, could you kindly look at your course’s page on the Thompson site in the ‘COURSES’ section and confirm that which we have taken the liberty of using is acceptable, or not? If not, your alternative suggestions would be appreciated. Feel free to contact, David Moote, STS Web-Site Committee Chair, with any questions or comments at website@stanleythompson.com.

II. SOCIETY ACTIVITIES Update

STS continues with an ambitious agenda to further its target objective of the preservation and forwarding of Thompson golf course tradition and classic golf in general, through education, exposure/access and shared experience. Current projects are the completion of a series of Technical Guides, a 3rd party Provenance Research Study authenticating Thompson courses and the on-going search/expansion of the Stanley Thompson Collection of artifacts, plans, notes, photos, articles, anecdotes, etc. at the University of Guelph Archives.

Regarding the latter, the archival ‘STANLEY THOMPSON COLLECTION’, STS respectfully asks that Clubs and individuals make contact with the Society to discuss the preservation, hosting or donation of any Thompson historical materials at the University in a secure, controlled environment. Typically, protocol is to provide scans or reasonable reproductions of donated materials to the donating Club upon request. Note too that in certain instances, donations do qualify for tax receipts from the University. Thompson archivist and historian John Smith can be contacted at archives@stanleythompson.com.

Recently STS Executive Director Bill Newton has contacted Member Clubs of the Society requesting comment and interest in participating in a fledgling initiative, ‘Tap-In’ whereby access to golf and/or club facilities is made available to individual ‘Friends’ (members) of the Society. A reminder that the ‘Tap-In’ program is at the exploratory stage only. Interest in participating from both current STS Club Members as well as Thompson courses that are not currently members is welcomed. Mr. Newton can be contacted at dormie@stanleythompson.com.

‘Appreciate your time and interest today. The Society, in closing does ask for your support in growing its member and support base. Any encouragement you might feel comfortable providing to prospective new Club and Corporate members, as well as individuals (‘Friends’) is greatly appreciated. As well, please consider adding a link to the Stanley Thompson Society's website from your own website. Thank you. dlm 905-454-5222
