Karsh Festival

The Portrait Gallery of Canada is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Yosuf Karsh’s birth. The celebrated portrait photographer captured Stanley Thompson in 1948, the same year his many portraits included Albert Einstein, President Harry Truman, Joan Crawford and the Marx Brothers.  STS/RCGA Seminar Series


The fourth session will be held Thursday, February 5, 7-9 pm at the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, Glen Abbey. The topic is: PGA Golf Tour – Classic vs Modern tournament courses. Panelists are: Dean A. Baker, Course Superintendent, The Club at North Halton; Bill Paul, Tournament Director, RBC Canadian Open; and a media guest to be named. This interesting format permits ample opportunity to interact with the panelists. Admission is $15 pp. Light refreshments will be served. STS Research Program


This program is progressing which is confirmed by a recent letter from the University of Guelph (attached). The letter confirms receipt of $7,500 from the Society to assist in the funding of the project It also makes this statement: “ . . . is a very exciting project . ..  will generate a definitive catalogue of Stanley Thompson’s work that will clearly identify . . . and further STS reputation as the undisputed authority on Stanley Thompson”.

Edmonton G&CC

Specific hard evidence has now been received establishing Edmonton as a Stanley Thompson project. This information has now been passed on to Kirsten Brown, University of Guelph graduate student who is undertaking the research of Thompson courses. We hope to welcome Edmonton as a new Member Club in the near future.

 Ambassador Program


The Society is now in the process of appointing Ambassadors at each of its Member Clubs. We are also pleased to report that members Matt Thompson and Gerry Langille (both from Calgary) have accepted the role of  Ambassadors in charge of Western Canada. This complements the acceptance of member Ken Donovan in the same capacity for the Maritimes.
 

St. George’s

Home for the 2010 Canadian Open, St. George’s will name its newly renovated dining room The Stanley Thompson Room.

Board Meeting

The next meeting of the Board of Directors will be held February 6 at Galt G&CC. Galt will host the 2009 Thompson Golf Classic.
